And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
What I’ve learned this Lent is how important it is to break it. I’ve hated it when I’ve told people what I’ve given up, even though usually the situation brings up the topic, and not myself. Even so, it’s probably best to silently deny our own denials (Matt. 6:16ff), trusting that humility and obedience are far more formative than strict observance of traditions, however otherwise helpful.
